Agricultural Sector in Argentina

By Anabel Marín and Maximiliano Vila Seoane

This sectorial report has two main aims. The first one is to describe the main characteristics of the dominant system of production utilized in the agricultural sector in Argentina, paying particular attention to the challenges/problems faced by this system to satisfy three goals: economic growth, social inclusion and sustainability. The second is to identify niches (spaces of alternative systems of production) that address these challenges faced by the dominant system in different ways.

The Amazon Region and the Use of its Biodiversity

By Antônio Galvão, Mayra Juruá, Luis Esteves and Fernando Castanheira

This Report focuses on the Brazilian Amazon region, analysing current forms of exploitation of its resources and their problems and consequences for the region's development. The objective is to explore the relationship between dominant and alternative pathways and the benefits of pursuing new ways of exploiting its resources through alternative productions that help to address high environmental impacts, low knowledge and value added of current practices, weak innovation and inefficient production chains.

Copper Mining in Chile

By José Miguel Benavente and Daniel Goya

The objective of this report is to characterize the way the copper mining sector works in Chile and what it represents in terms of development; to analyze its problems (caused by the continuing decrease in ore grades, greater water and energy use) and the challenges it poses to the Chilean economy; and finally, to describe some of the alternatives that attempt to tackle those problems and/or pave the way for innovation-driven growth.
